What is it?

About this condition

Neuralgias are intense electric shock or burning pains caused by damage or irritation of a nerve. They are frequently underdiagnosed and poorly managed with conventional analgesics. Interventional treatment goes directly to the affected nerve.

Common symptoms

How does it present?

  • Intense electric shock pain in the face, head, or nerve area
  • Short but devastating pain episodes
  • Burning sensation or sharp prickling
  • Pain triggered by touch, chewing, or movement
  • Pain following herpes zoster (shingles)
  • Occipital headache or pain at the base of the skull

Interventional approach

Treatment options

Each case is evaluated individually. The treatment plan is defined at the first appointment.

Trigeminal nerve block

Injection of anesthetic or corticosteroid into the ganglion or affected trigeminal branch to interrupt the pain cycle.

Pulsed radiofrequency of the Gasserian ganglion

For refractory trigeminal neuralgia. Modulates pain transmission without destroying the nerve.

Occipital nerve block

Injection into the greater and lesser occipital nerves for occipital headache and Arnold's neuralgia.

Sympathetic block for post-herpetic neuralgia

For the persistent burning pain after herpes zoster, addressing the sympathetic component of the pain.

Frequently asked questions

FAQ · Neuralgias

Can trigeminal neuralgia be cured? +
It can be very well controlled with interventional treatment. Radiofrequency of the Gasserian ganglion offers prolonged relief in most patients.
Will shingles leave me in permanent pain? +
Post-herpetic neuralgia is not always permanent. With timely interventional treatment — ideally started soon — it can be significantly reduced.
Does the occipital block work for migraine? +
Yes, occipital nerve block is an effective option for occipital migraine and cervicogenic headache.
How long does nerve block relief last? +
Variable depending on the type of neuralgia and nerve. It can range from weeks to months. Treatment is personalized based on each patient's response.
